Training
Summary
In late 1995 and early 1996, I helped maintain a network of
workstations and Xterminals for the Applied Mathematics department at
the University of Washington. I became a systems administrator
supporting terabyte-scale Sequent servers for Boeing Information and
Support Services in the Fall of 1996 and became the lead administrator
for a team within the same group at the beginning of 1997. Along with
my duties as a lead administrator, I played an important role in the
certification of three new technologies for use at Boeing and helped
implement the technologies after certification was complete.
Throughout 2001, I was a primary resource for Linux/UNIX systems
design and support and computer security for a network consisting of
approximately 200 machines at a bioinformatics firm. In this
capacity, I designed and implemented firewalls, was a main designer of
the procedure for automatically reproducing the company's primary
bioinformatic product, and performed all of the routine tasks of a
systems administrator.
Since the Fall of 1995, I have performed most of my research on Linux
systems that I maintain. I have performed the full spectrum of
administrative tasks and have done considerable software development
under Linux.
I have maintained several Microsoft Windows systems, from Windows 3.0
through XP. I have developed software under Windows 95 and 98, have
solved problems under Windows, and have performed many hardware and
software installations, updates, and reconfigurations. In particular,
I performed extensive Y2K remediation, prior to January 1, 2000, on
several machines running Windows 95 and 98.
Experience
Computational Scientist
Integrated Genomics, Inc.
2001
As part of this position, I was a primary resource for Linux/UNIX
systems design and support and computer security. At the time, the
computing resources at Integrated Genomics consisted of approximately
200 machines running Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and a variety of
Microsoft operating systems. In this capacity, I
- Designed and implemented firewalls to stop crippling attacks.
- Was one of two primary developers of the procedure for quickly
reproducing our primary bioinformatic product. This procedure
replaced a several-day-long, error-prone, manual process with
an automatic process taking less than an hour.
- Designed, built, and installed systems.
- Installed and replaced hardware.
- Installed and updated software.
- Built custom kernels and upgraded BIOS software.
- Performed backups.
- Monitored systems for performance and security.
- Assisted users and other administrators.
- Solved problems.
- Wrote perl and bash scripts to support all of the above activities.
Linux Systems Administrator
I have installed and maintained several Linux systems that I have used
for most of my scientific research, the systems at Integrated Genomics
that I described above, as well as miscellaneous Linux systems at
Boeing.
1995 - present
- Installed and configured
- Red Hat Linux 2.x - 7.x,
- Slackware Linux 4.x,
- Mandrake Linux 6.x - 8.x.
as the sole OS or in dual boot configurations with Windows 95, 98,
ME, and 2000 on desktop and notebook/laptop computers.
- Patched, configured, and compiled kernels in the 1.2.x, 2.0.x,
2.2.x, and 2.4.x series to support the particular hardware of
specific systems and to increase security and performance.
- Benchmarked network performance for ethernet and PLIP and
optimized NFS.
- Created Bash and Perl scripts for administrative tasks, including
a Perl module for transfering directory trees using FTP, which I used
to perform nightly backups of my scientific work over a dial-up connection.
- Performed BIOS upgrades and extensive hardware work, including
- Adding memory and replacing defective memory.
- Adding hard drives and replacing defective hard drives.
- Installing hard drive controller boards, modems,
and ethernet cards.
- Copying systems to new hard drives.
- Processor upgrades.
- Fan replacement.
- Floppy and CD drive replacement.
- Extensive hardware and software configuration and troubleshooting.
- Constructed PLIP and ethernet networks.
Lead Systems Administrator
DCAC/MRM project, Boeing Information and Support Services
January 1997 - November 1997
- Lead administrator for a team of 7 systems administrators responsible
for maintaining 8 Sequent Symmetry 5000 data servers, including
a two-node cluster, and 1 Sequent NUMA-Q 2000 data server.
- Resolved procedural disputes between my team and other teams of
administrators that originated with my predecessor. This improved cohesion
within my group and increased the respect accorded to my team.
- Helped resolve disputes and misunderstandings and improve the
relationship between my group and the database administration group.
- Helped create activity schedules in cooperation with upper management.
- Helped assess hardware, software, processes, and procedures in
cooperation with other technical leads and technical services personnel.
- Planned, supervised, and participated in hardware and software upgrades,
hardware and software reconfigurations, new systems builds, and routine
maintenance activities.
- Cooperated with database administrators and technical services
personnel in solving problems, increasing performance, and maintaining
databases and systems.
- Guided and instructed less knowledgable administrators.
- Served as a technical resource to management and other administrators.
- Member of the team of systems administrators and technical service
personnel that certified use of NUMA-Q 2000 systems, EMC storage devices,
and STK tape libraries at Boeing. As part of this effort, I led a team
of 8 administrators and technical services personnel in certifying
the NUMA-Q 2000 hardware, Dynix/ptx 4.4.x, and SVM 2.0.x. This involved
setting up, maintaining, and testing 5 NUMA-Q 2000 systems, including
a two-node cluster, connected to one or more 868 GB EMC Symmetrix 3430
storage devices and STK 9710 tape libraries.
- Planned the upgrade of 3 terabyte-scale Symmetry 5000 data servers
from ptx 4.1.4 to ptx 4.4.1 and led my team in performing this task.
- Created and maintained Perl and Korn shell scripts for monitoring
system integrity and performance, for controlling applications, and for
creating the logical volume objects needed to support databases.
- Completed all Sequent training pertaining to differences between
administering systems running Dynix/ptx 4.1.x and Dynix/ptx 4.4.x.
- Completed Oracle training in Oracle 7 database administration.
- Maintained an SGI workstation running IRIX 5.3 and 6.2, a Dell
Dimension laptop running Slackware Linux 4.x and Windows 95, and a Toshiba
laptop running Red Hat Linux 5.x and Windows 95 for use in performing my
duties.
Systems Administrator
DCAC/MRM project, Boeing Information and Support Services
September 1996 - December 1996
- Maintained Sequent Symmetry 5000 data servers running Dynix/ptx 4.1.4.
Systems were 1, 2, or 3-node clusters with thousands of users, approximately
a terabyte of disk space, and from a couple thousand to nearly 10,000
logical volume objects.
- Developed Perl and Korn shell administrative scripts and Perl CGI
scripts for monitoring system performance over the company's intranet.
- Completed all Sequent systems administration courses pertaining to
the Symmetry 5000 data servers running Dynix/ptx 4.1.x.
Assistant Systems Administrator
Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Washington
December 1995 - March 1996
- Helped maintain a network of 7 DEC 3000 Alphas, an SGI Indigo2,
a Sun Sparc 20, and 25 XTerminals sharing a common NFS file system
and NIS user database.
- Upgraded and installed software.
- Maintained and enhanced the department's web site.
- Assisted and instructed users.
- Conducted routine maintenance such as running backups, restoring
lost files, and servicing printers.
Microsoft Windows Administration
Maintained systems running MS Windows 3.0 through XP.
- Performed hardware and software installations, updates,
and reconfigurations.
- Y2K remediation for Windows 95 and 98 machines:
- Determined which applications were vunerable.
- Located appropriate patches and upgrades.
- Performed BIOS and software upgrades.
- Solved problems.
