Just as the color force field that binds quarks together may be modeled as quantized loops of electric flux, the gravitational field that draws masses together may be represented by considering quantized loops of gravitational, that is geometric, flux. This way of representing gravity is called loop quantum gravity. In this approach, space is composed of loops of gravitational flux. The loops do not reside in a background space. Space is made out of the loops. Each loop represents a volume of space on the order of the cube of the Planck length, which is on the order of 10-99 m3. Interactions between the loops define time. The briefest interactions between loops represent times on the order of the Planck time, that is on the order of 10-43 s.
