People are trying to find a background-independent theory that has the consistent string theories as solutions. This theory has been dubbed "M-theory", where what the "M" stands for is unspecified. One way of trying to understand how to approach this problem has been to look for features common to all of the consistent string theories and to build a theory based on these common features.
